Christmas Island are actually two different places. One lies in Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean, and the other is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. One was named by Captain William Mynors in 1643 when sailing and travelled to the nearest island for this holiday. The other Christmas Island was discovered by Captain Cook in 1777. Both islands have been an island of peace and no fighting occurred during World War II. Even though the island has a Christian name, oddly enough, less than 18% of the population is Christian, but Buddhist are 36% of the population, followed by 25% Muslims. This Austrailian territory is comprised of Caucasian, Chinese, Malay, and Indian races. There are dialects of Chinese, Malay and Tamil Indian along with a strong Australian influence.
