Earthquakes are easily the single most destructive force in nature. Without warning they strike, easily toppling buildings and destroying homes, lives and cities. The Earth has a series of plates, and the plates shift and create friction between each other, when they push each other, the ground moves, and all the buildings, powerlines and everything else underneath it moves to. The Richter Scale is a measurement to scale the severity of each earthquake. A small, mild earthquake is 3 on the Richter Scale (like the vibration of a large truck passing), a earthquake of 6 or higher can be devastating. The earthquake in Istanbul, Turkey recently measured 7.8, and killed thousands and injured tens of thousands more. Sometime more deadly than the earthquakes, are the after shocks... the 'ripple' effect like throwing a pebble in the water -- there can be as many as 100 of these after the initial earthquake which can be just as damaging.
