In 1993 H. Ty Warner had and idea to sell a small, inexpensive plush toy for about $5. He did not want to do a lot of advertising and knew he could not compete with the big guys on the same level in this market. So he started to distribute his small stuffed Beanie Babies to small gift shops, card stores and airport souvenir shops. Just a few short years later the Beanie Baby fad really caught on in a big way. So much so, that the original 6 colored teddy bears now sell for $2,000 if they have their tags in place undamaged because they are so rare. Unlike the cabbage patch doll fad which has faded, and the Elmo craze which died after just one Christmas, Beanie Babies still continue to more and more popular each year. Technically, Ty insists that they stores sell these cute little stuffed animals for no more than $10, but because they are so popular, they are often sold on the secondary market (people who have purchased them and then go to sell the beanies themselves privately). So the rarer ones you will have to pay top dollar for, and you do have to be careful as there are counterfeit and fakes out there. Here are some of the more reputable dealers, but as always, take caution if you do not know your Beanies well!
