This hard working girl celebrated her 33rd
Birthday on the road this Summer at the
Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, not too far from her Adirondack
home in New York.
Raised in the same place as her parents, the great northland of Ontario, her adopted father was an Ojibway Indian and she took her name Shania, meanining "On My Way" when Nashville decided Eileen would not suffice. She was the oldest of 5 children but says she missed out on her childhood due to the fact that they were poor. As a child, she would be woken up at 1 a.m. to be brought to a club when they stopped serving liquor so she could sing. She soon began making money doing small gigs to help pay for food since they often went to bed hungry from not having anything to eat. At the age of 21 she lost both her parents in an automobile accident. When her parents died her brothers (13 & 14) and younger sister were still living at home. To help support them she took a job singing at the Deerhurst resort. Soon after she headed off to Nashville. Though country music for a native Canadian may seem odd, it was her parent's obsession of country that brought her to take interest in it. She grew up listening to Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette, but also along with the Carpenters, the Supremes, the Jacksons, etc.
Shania's first album had a great deal of success internationally and earned her the CMT Europe's Rising Video Star of the Year award. Her next release, The Woman in Me, was an international project written in Spain, Italy, the Caribbean, England Canada and the United States. It was also on this project that she met the love of her life and now her husband, producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, 14 years her senior, who also wrote and produced her last two albums, The Woman in Me and Come On Over. "We knew that we were about to break a lot of rules" says Shania, Mutt Lange had been producing for groups like AC/DC, Def Leppard and Bryan Adams. But they did go against the grain of Nashville traditions and made history and launched her as an international star.
In 1995 she was listed in People Magazine's 25 Most Intriguing as well as being voted "The Sexiest Woman Alive" in a poll of listeners by a nationally syndicated radio talk-show. While she is very slim, sexy and often wears revealing fashions, Shania makes no apologies for the way she dresses, but at the same time she says "I don't want to be seen as just a pretty face with a pretty voice, that type of thing. For me, not singing my own material, is just so awkward. I'm in control of my career now. I enjoy it because I want to do it, not because I have to." We are glad you do Shania...
