Alan B. Shepard, Jr.

November 18, 1923  - - -  July 22, 1998 

Born in Derry, New Hampshire, Astronaut Alan Shepard, Jr. became the first American to fly in space on the Mercury space capsule, and one of only a dozen Americans to walk on the moon.  He died of leukemia in a community hospital in Monterey, California.
