Tito Puente
(Ernesto Antonio Puente, Jr.)
Born April 20, 1923 - - - Died June 1, 2000
Born in Harlem, this musical legend and genius remained popular for over 60 years. An inspiration to his son and daughter musicians, Carols Santana, Mark Anthony and Ricky Martin. Probably the best cymbalist that ever lived, he was known as the salsa pioneer and mambo king. He studied at Julliard and had a trademark bright smile. Tito even performed just weeks before his death with an ailing heart, with the same zest and vigor as he always has. He is most famous for Oye Come Va, which Carlos Santana adapted.
