Cardinal John O'Connor
1920 - - - Wednesday, May 3, 2000
Spiritual leader of over 2 million Roman Catholics in the New York Archdiocese died at age 80 in his home with close friends. A man who often had lunch and was friends with Pope John Paul II, he suffered from poor health for nearly a year before passing on. In August of 1999 he had a brain tumor removed. He made a trip to Israel to mend relations though it was not sanctioned by the church, but he did it for others to take notice of the holocoust. He was against abortion but had more liberal views on homelessness, AIDs, and other traditionally conservative issues. While many said he had the Irish temper, he was also known as a man of compassion and only wanted to be remembered as a "good priest".
