Fond Farewell

William H. Harrison, President (Whig)

Born in Charles City County, Virginia, 1773 - - - 1841

William Harrison is most famous for having served the shortest Presidential term ever.  His father was Benjamin, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.  William Harrison defeated Martin Van Buren of the Democrat party who had 1,127,781 popular votes and 60 electoral votes. Harrison died of pneumonia exactly one month after his inauguration. His Vice President, John Tyler, served the remaining 3 years and 11 months of Harrison's term. Harrison's grandson Benjamin Harrison was elected President in 1890, the only grandfather and grandson pair to hold the office.  His most famous quote is "The prudent capitalist will never adventure his capital... if there exists a state of uncertainty as to whether the Government will repeal to-morrow what it has enacted to-day." Second annual message, Congress December 6, 1842.
