John Denver

(John Deutchendorf)

December 31, 1943  - - -  October 12, 1997

A wholesome country singer who met up later in life with 2 failed marriages and alcoholism after the highest point of his career in the 1970s.  Amazing, considering the fact that he was initially rejected by 16 different record companies.  He did make it to the top after he got his first contract with RCA Records for 4 albums, the first 3 failed, but the 4th gave him a hit with Take Me Home Country Roads, which hit the #2 spot.  In 1974 he got his own televisison show with lasted 3 years and was successful, with his record sales reacing platinum and gold.  In 1977 he made a movie with George Burns called Oh God.  That was the peak of his career.  His latter years were met with depression, alcoholism and when he finally started to clean up, he died while flying his personal airplane over the California coast.  He had flown before, and that was something he shared with his father who was one of the best pilots in the US Air Force. At the time of his death he was flying this time without a license. Unfortunately, John may have benefitted from seeking addiction treatment.
