Born in Fairmont, Indiana, James Dean had modest Midwest roots.  Just 24 short years later he would enter Hollywood and ironically his life would end with the love of his Porche Spyder 550 sports car that crashed head on with a truck in Paso Robles, California.  He needed to wear glasses, but he often didn't, especially on the set, because the straining to see and bad vision actually helped him to focus.  He has often compared to silent screen legend Rudolph Valentino, who also made just a few movies, was tremendously popular and died a tragic death at an early age.  While he only made three films, he is an icon and idol today, decades after East of Eden, Rebel Without A Cause and Giant were in theatres.

In 1996 James Dean was honored on a US Postage Stamp
