Billy Ray Cyrus was born in Kentucky, his parents divorced when he was just 6 years old. His father was an AFL/CIO organizer and a 20-year state legislator in Kentucky. Billy Ray got his start by fronting in a bar 5 nights a week on the Ohio-Kentucky scene. He sharpened his skills leading that Sly Dog band (named after his one-eyed old bulldog) at the Ragtime Lounge in Huntington, West Virginia. The 6' tall, hazel-eyed, brown-haired Billy recalls "We played everything from Johnny Cash to Bruce Springsteen. I would sing Sing Me Back Home by Merle Haggard and follow that with Rebel Yell by Billy Idol.". Today he is most famous for "Achy Breaky Heart" in 1992, it sold eight million to date, and ranks as on the 10 biggest selling albums of the '90s and is the biggest selling debut album in history.
Billy Ray went on to s record many more hits, and in 1993 he was nominated in 5 categories at the Grammy Awards. He had worn a shirt with the scripture "John 3:16" in reference to one of his favorites. "I wanted to say thanks to God for my five nominations, ayear before, Id been living in my car. I wanted to give credit where credit was due" Billy Ray stated. He didnt win anything that night. On the way home waiting for his plane home, he picked up a newspaper and read, in big, bold type: CYRUS BIG LOSER. Someone nudged him from behind, it was Bob Seeger who had also been at the show, and he said "Put that newspaper where it belongs -- underneath your feet."
He married his wife Leticia just after Christmas in 1993. He has a daughter Destiny Hope; Braison Chance; and 2 stepchildren: Brandi and Trace, he also has a 4-year-old son named Christopher Cody who lives with his mother in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. His hobbies include working out, horses and motorcycles
