Born in Oklahoma, Toby Keith Covel grew up with two sisters and with influences like Merle Haggard, Jimmy Buffett, Billy Joel, Mickey Mantle and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He plays guitar and mandolin and has other interests such as golf, fishing, collecting baseball cards and other memorabilia. His awards includes Billboard's Top New Country Artist of 1993; 6 BMI Songwriter Awards; 6 BMI Publisher Awards; and The CMA Triple Play Songwriter Award of 1995.
