Fond Farewell

Harry Chapin

December 7, 1942  - - -  July 16, 1981

After establishing his popularity in the seventies with folk-rock story songs, Harry Chapin devoted his efforts to various humanitarian projects. The son of a jazz drummer Chapin sang in the Brooklyn Heights Boys Choir. In his teens he played guitar and banjo in a band with his brothers. He and his brothers began playing in Greenwich Village clubs and making documentary films. In the late sixties Chapin made a film with John Jacobs called Legendary Champions which was nominated for an Academy Award. In 1971 he formed his own band with a cello player. His debut album stayed on the charts for six months driven by the strength of the top twenty hit "Taxi". His 1973 album "Short Stories" yielded another hit with "W.O.L.D." and his 1974 album "Balderdash" went gold on the strenght of the #1 hit "Cats in the Cradle". His Subsequant albums sold respectivly throughout the seventies. Harry Chapin averaged over 200 concerts a year between 1972 and 1980, more than half of them for varios charity organizations, for which he raised literally millions of dollars. Chapin was killed in a car accident on the Long Island expressway on July 16, 1981.
