Wireless Internet Service Providers
A PCMCIA card is about the size of a credit card, only a little thicker, and it slides into the side of your laptop. The card itself from Sierra Wireless (shown at left and available at www.sierrawireless.com) is about $400, but can be more if you do not buy the internet service plan. The most reliable I have found for all my travels in the US is Go America (www.goamerica.net). It works fine in most parts of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania (except Belleville & Asbury Bethelem Township in NJ; Poconos & Stroudsburg, PA; and some cafes in Manhattan due to metal structures). Currently they charge $69/month for unlimited use, and this is digital cellular service. You will not be able to connect if you don't attach the small antenna that plugs into the side of the card. The one major drawback to this type of internet connection is it takes us back to 1995 when there were 18.8k modems, this one is 19.3k, but its very slow for web surfing, and you cannot download your email as fast. It beats having to pay hotels for dialling out even if you have a toll free/local number, and if you are on the road/bus/train.
