Travel & Being Connected: Palm Pilots

Palmtops & Palm Pilots
I honestly don't think these new palmtops with internet access will cut it. After reviewing the service agreement, we all on staff concluded that the equivalent of 3 emails per day would not be practical nor cost effective. There is a charge if a certain number of megabytes are used above the $24/month rate. Palmtop, Palm Pilot and palm pager connections may not work overseas or in different countries. In fact, it was only introduced on the East Coast in the NYC Area because that was the only place it did have access. It planned to be in California by late 1999 just in time for enough to worry that it may crash in the new Millennium.

At $600, it may be worthwhile to buy a sub compact notebook. But, if you want a calculator, appointment book, organizer, which can also check and send email without having to wait to startup dialing in ,connecting and shut down, this is it. It is an expensive toy, but quite frankly it does have its value: Directions. You are temporarily lost on suburban street, country road or interstate highway, and this allows you to access MapQuest (www.mapquest.com). After you enter your start point and destination, it maps out directions for you. Lets say you travel so far into the woods that when it is time to leave the camp grounds, friend's house or whatever, and you cannot get a signal to connect (which happens often) you can simply look at the history which stores the directions you used to get there. The one thing I was surprised it could not do its type in 500 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan and get the cross street. That should be easy enough, but somehoe it would not let me look it up without a starting destination. (It's 42nd street in case you are curious). Something like this would be a dream for a salesman on the stomping ground of Manhattan.

In addition to MapQuest you can also get news from ABC, sports from ESPN and weather from The Weather Channel and a dozen other services like The Wall Street Journal, E-Trade, Yahoo People Search, and the other everyday things like Movie Fone, ATM Locator and UPS shipping just to name a few. But remember, this is all content and services created for the Palm VII - - YOU CANNOT SURF or browse the internet with this, and it is in black and white, or rather LCD black & green.
