Easy HTML Editing of Webpages
1. Programs/Applications Needed: On your computer you will need the following programs to edit your website quickly:
HTML Editor (AOL Press)
Connection to the internet (Preferably Erols, or AOL if Erols does not work)
FTP (File Transfer, WS-FTP)
Web Browser AFTER you have made the changes (Explorer or Netscape)
RULES OF THUMB: If more than one person is working on a website or page, YOU MUST ALWAYS download the most recent version from the webserver. If there are more than one copy of a page on 2 or more different computers, it is very important not to overwrite changes of the other person and/or changes you made on a different computer. If you always download the page you want to edit from the webserver FIRST, you can be sure it is the most recent version and you will not overwrite other changes.
2. FTP - File Transfer Protocol: You must first have a connection to the internet, so sign on to an online service.
Open the FTP Program
Click on the OK icon to connect to your webserver.
Remember, the files on your computer (hard drive) appear on the left in alphabetical order. The files on right hand side of the screen are those on the webserver, your website that everyone can see.
The Arrows in the middle of the FTP screen point to the right and left. The top arrow (pointing to left) takes files from the right hand of the screen (the webserver) and puts them on your computer hard drive to work on. The arrow on the bottom, points to the right, that is for talking the files from your computer and putting them on the website.
Highlight the files you want to transfer by clicking on the file name (for example, your homepage, default.htm)
