File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a way of moving files across the internet from one computer to another. The most common use of this application is taking files such as HTML documents and graphics from the hard drive on your computer and putting them on a webserver. This is how websites are built and made.
There are a number of FTP Programs for the PC including CuteFTP, WS-FTP, there are others, and AOL has a built in FTP program. By far the easiest to use is WS-FTP Version 4.01. It is also free to students. This section is specifically geared toward the WS-FTP version, although many of the same rules still apply.
Creating A New Profile
Profile Name: whatever you wish to call it, usually the name of the website, ours is TIGERX.COM
Host Type: this is the type of server you are using, but if you do not know, it will automatically be detected, most are UNIX or Microsoft NT servers
User ID: your login or user name
Password: if you are in an office or at a computer which is used by more than one person, it is a good idea not to store or save the password on your computer.
Account: sometimes your email address would go in this section, but you can also leave it out.
Options
By clicking on the OPTIONS button icon you can make some settings which are very important.
By clicking on the SESSION OPTIONS button icon, select the FORCE LOWERCASE options. Always use lower case letters when transferring files, servers and search engines are often case sensitive, in other words if the name of your file is www.tigerx.com/Index.htm and you type in www.tigerx.com/index.htm - the file will not be found because it is looking for a file with a capital letter in it.
SAVE DIRECTORY NAMES will allow you to save the file directories you are working on both on your hard drive and on the webserver.
Key Tips To Remember
The files on the left side of the application are those on your hard drive
The files on the right side of the application are those on the webserver
Be sure you are in the correct directory when transferring files, or you will replace the homepage from one directory with the other.
