In 1776 representatives from the exisiting 13 colonies in the new world declared its independence from England. July 4th is the day marked that the year was half over according to the Julian calendar. The Declaration of Independence was signed by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, and many others. Today the holiday is celebrated fireworks to remember the "bombs bursting in air" as it is sung in the Star Spangled Banner, a song written by Francis Scott Key, who had witnessed a brutal bombing by the British but through it all, the American flag still was waving in the morning, tattered, burned, but still sailing, as it does today.
