Christoforo Columbo (Latinized to Christopher Columbus, Cristobal Colon in Spanish) was born in Genoa in 1451.He arrived in Watling Island in the Bahamas after originally setting out to find a new trade route to India. At first he believed that he had he had found Asia or an outer island of India. The world was still thought to be flat at that time and even his crew attempted mutiny when the trip went longer than planned and they were running short of food. He had left on August 3rd with 3 ships containing 120 men, the Pinta, the Nina, and the flagship Santa Maria.
Columbus sailed under the flag of Spain since his native Italy thought he was insane. Today both the Spanish and the Italians take credit for the celebration of his name, though they had previously thought him to be a crazy fool.
