1911  Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen becomes the first man to reach the South Pole
1939  Soviet Union dropped from the League of Nations.
1946  The United Nations General Assembly votes to establish UN headquarters in New York.
1962  US space probe Mariner II approaches Venus and transmits information about the planet.
1981  Israel annexes Golan Heights from Syria.
1999  The US hands returns control over the Panama Canal to the Panamanian Government as was agreed in the 1977 treaty signed by US Presdient Jimmy Carter, who was on hand this day  for the ceremony.
