1804  Napoleon Bonaparte is crowned emperor at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France.
1816  The Philadelphia Savings Fund Society opens as the first US savings bank in in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1927  Henry Ford of the Ford Motor Company unveils his Model A automobile.
1942  Scientists at the University of Chicago demonstrate a nuclear chain reaction.
1954  US Senate votes to condemn Wisconsin Republican Joseph R. McCarthy for "conduct that tends to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute."  In other words, he had been on a witch hunt for communists, singling out even the innocent in the wake of paranoia.
1970  The EPA (Enviromental Protection Agency) began operation.
