1779  The College of Pennsylvania became the University of Pennsylvania, the first legally recognized university in America.
1889  The first driving permit was given to Curtis P. Brady to drive an automobile through Central Park in New York City with a pledge to New York Police that he would not frighten the horses in the park.
1910  Pennsylvania Station (now called Penn Station) opened in New York City.
1951  16-year-old Hosea Richardson becomes the first black (Afro-American) horse racing jockey.
