1626  St. Peter's Basilica dedicated in Rome.
1921  Washington, DC hosted the first international fencing championships.
1978  914 people, including 264 children are found dead at the People's Temple in Jonestown, Guyana. Reverend Jim Jones ordered that Congressman Ryan and four other Americans sent there were to be killed.  Jim Jones killed himself the next day with a gun and his followers had drank a punch containing deadly potassium cyanide.
