1944 Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt is re-elected president of the United States for a record 3rd time. He died in during his 4th term, and Vice President Harry S. Truman took over, but then made it a law that a president can only serve a maximum of 2 4-year terms so that there can never be a dictatorship in the United States
1980 Actor Steve McQueen dies in Juarez, Mexico at age 50.
1989 Democrat David Dinkins becomes the first Afro-American Mayor of New York City.
