1938  The War of the Worlds radio broadcast by Orson Welles cause hysteria nationwide which was a hoax of an alien invasion starting in New Jersey.
1974  Muhammad Ali (born as Cassius Clay) wins the heavyweight boxing match known as the Rumble in the Jungle in Kinshasa, Zaire, against opponent George Foreman after a prison sentance for refusing  the US draft for religious reasons.  The match was promoted by Don King.
