1781  British General Charles Lord Cornwallis surrendered to US General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, and brought an end to the last major battle of the Revolutionary War, and winning independence from the most powerful nation in the world.
1812  1 month after Napoleon Bonaparte's massive invading forces entered burning Moscow, is forced to retreat out of Russia since the starving French army had no means to survive the Russian winter.
