1469  Ferdinand of Aragon married Isabella of Castile, beginning cooperative reign to unite all the dominions of Spain and accelerate them to dominant world power.
1860 British troops, in the last weeks of the second Opium War (a coalition to crush Chinese resistance to European colonization) burn Yuanmingyuan imperial summer palace built by the Manchu emperors.  The Chinese surrender soon after.
1867  Alaska formally handed over from Russia to the US and at Sitka the American flag is raised, all for just $7 million dollars.
1898  US takes control of Puerto Rico just 1 year after Puerto Rico won independence from Spanish rule.
1970 Quebec Minister of Labor found strangled to death 8 days after his kidnapping by the militant separist group Quebec Liberation Front (FLQ).  Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau sent in troops to have them release another kidnapped official and neutralized them by arresting over 500 separists.
