1066  King Harold II of England is defeated by the Norman forces of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings.
1912  US Presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt is shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin just before speech by anarchist William Schrenk.  The bullet was mostly absorbed by a huge manuscript in his breast pocket and only suffered a minor injury. 
1944  Athens, the capital of Greece is liberated by British during World War II.
1964  Afro-American civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is awarded the Nobel Peace.
