1492 Christopher Columbus (his original Italian name is Christoforo Columbo, they later Latinized it), sailing under the Spanish flag since his native Italy thought he was insane, arrived in Watling Island in the Bahamas. He originally set out to find a new trade route to India, and he first believed that he had he had found Asia. The world was still thought to be flat at that time and even his crew attempted mutiny when the trip went longer than planned and they were running short of food. He had left on August 3rd with 3 ships containing 120 men, the Pinta, the Nina, and the flagship Santa Maria.
1810 The Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, (later King Ludwig I of Bavaria) married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. They festvities were planned to repeat every year, thus giving birth to Oktoberfest.
1915 British nurse Edith Cavell was executed during World War I by a German firing squad in Brussels for helping Allied soldiers escape.
1928 The first commerical dirigible to cross the Atlantic was the Graf Zeppelin, named after its inventor Ferdinand von Zeppelin.
