1845  The US Naval Academy opens in Annapolis, Maryland.
1913  The Panama Canal is completed.
1959  Pan American World Airways becomes the first global airline service.
1970  The militant separist group, Quebec Liberation Front (FLQ), kidnapped Quebec labor minister Pierre Laporte and strangled him to death when their ransom was not met.  Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau sent in troops to have them release another kidnapped official and neutralized them by arresting over 500 separists.
1973  US Vice President Spiro Agnew resigns for income tax evasion and was replaced by Gerald R. Ford who became president when Richard M. Nixon resigned
