1855  Isaac Singer of New York patents the sewing machine motor.
1858  Stagecoach mail service began between San Francisco, California and St. Louis, Missouri and was delivered in 23 days.
1872  The Montgomery Ward department store issued the first mail order catalog.
1940  St. Peter's Cathedral suffered some damage when the German Nazis bombed London
1946
 The first electric blanket sold for $39.50 in Petersburg, Virginia.
1967  Doc Severinsen replaced Skitch Henderson and became musical director of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on NBC-TV.
1973  Elvis and Priscilla Presley got divorced after two years of separation in Santa Monica, California.  Priscilla got $1.5 million in cash, $4,200/month in alimony, half interest in a $750k home and 5% interest in two of Elvis' publishing companies.
1985  2.5 acres named Strawberry Fields in Central Park were dedicated to John Lennon widow Yoko Ono.
1986  Joan Rivers debuted on The Late Show on the fledgling FOX network opposite friend and boss Johnny Carson on NBC-TV, it was also the end of their friendship.
