1683  13 German and Dutch families traveled from Krefeld, Germany to accept William Penn's offer of 5,000 acres of land settlement called Germantown, which is today a neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1857  The American Chess Congress held their first national chess tournament in New York City.
1927  The first full length talking picture with music and dialogue, The Jazz Singer, opened in New York.
1961  US President John F. Kennedy advises American families to build or buy a bomb shelter for protection from any atomic fallout that may occur with the Soviet Union
1973  In an effor to win back territory lost to Israel during the 3rd Arab-Israeli war, Egyptian and Syrian engage in a surprise attack against Israel on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur.  The US and other Western countries back Israel in what is known as the Yom Kippur War, there is a cease-fire 2-weeks later but OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) launches an embargo that cripples the US and UK with a gasoline shortage.
1981  Egyptian President Anwar Sadat assassinated at a public military rally in Cairo by Muslim extremists. Many say this was due to his participation in signing a peach treaty with Israel.
