1895  19-year-old Horace Rawlin won the 1st US Open golf tournament held at Newport Golf Club in Newport, Rhode Island.
1957  Sputnik, the first man-made satellite, was launched by the former Soviet Union (now Russia).
1965  The first visit by a pope to the United States by Pope Paul VI, who arrived at Kennedy International Airport in New York City.
1992  A 16-year civil war ends when the Mozambique government signs a cease-fire with leaders of the Mozambican National Resistance (MNR).
1993  After tank assault lasting 10 hours on the Russian parliament building by rebel parliamentarians (led by Vice-President Alexander Rutskoi and Chairman Ruslan Khasbulatov) later surrender to Russian president Boris Yeltsin.
