1888  The body of prostitute Mary Ann Nichols found and becomes the first victim of London serial killer Jack the Ripper
1889  Thomas Alva Edison invents the kinetoscope, which led to motion pictures and other technology
1902  George C. Poage of Milwaukee, Wisconsin becomes the first African-American to win an Olympic medal
1919  The Communist Labor Party of America founded in Chicago, Illinois.
1969  World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Rocky Marciano killed in a small plane crash in Newton, Iowa.
1994  The Soviet Union departs from the former East Germany after half a century of military presence during a ceremony given by German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Russian President Boris Yeltsin.
1997  Princess Lady Diana Spencer of Whales and youngest daughter of the Earl of Spencer, is killed along with her companion Dodi Fayed in a car accident in Paris.
