1849  Venice surrenders to the Austrian forces
1879  The last great ruler of Zululand, Cetewayo, is captured by the British after his defeat at the battle of Ulundi.
1922  The first commercial broadcast on radio station WEAF in New York cost $100 and bought the Queensboro Realty Company 10 minutes of air-time.
1937  The Toyota Motor Company of Japan established
1947  Legendary bullfighter Manolete is fatally wounded by a bull during a fight in Linares, Spain.  His death the following day puts his nation into mourning.
1963  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his moving "I Have a Dream" speech, which was the highlight of the civil rights march in Washington, DC.
1988  33 People are killed during an air show in West Germany when jets from an Italian Air Force exhibition team collide in mid-air, sending a disabled aircraft crashing down into the crowd and injuring dozens in addition to the fatalities
