55 BC  Roman consul Julius Caesar invades England for the first time
1776  The Battle of Brooklyn leaves American revolutionaries defeated by the British and are forced to retreat to Manhattan.
1813  The Battle of Dresden begins and Napoleon's army of 100,000 send Austrian, Russian, and Prussian forces retreating even though their army was twice the size of Napoleon's
1828  Uruguay regains its independence with the signing of the Treaty of Rio de Janeiro between Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay won its independence from Spain in 1811, only to lose it to Portugal and Brazil in 1817.
1832  The Black Hawk War conflict stemming from the US attempt to resettle the Sauk Indians, ended with Chief Black Hawk's surrender, he had led his people back across the Mississippi River from resettlement in Iowa
1892  The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City almost completely destroyed by fire
