1346  Edward the III's small English army defeats the larger French forces athe Battle of Crecy, France.
1791  John Fitch granted a US patent for steamboats
1847  Liberia gains its independence and is renamed the Free and Independent Republic of Liberia, Africa's first post-colonial republic
1883  A volcano on the island of Krakatoa in Indonesia erupts and causes violent explosions and tidal waves that destroy two-thirds of the island, and over 36,000 people. The explosions could be heard over 1,000 miles away and resulting sea waves as far away as Cape Horn
1920  A ratification by the necessary thirty-six states, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution grants women the right to vote.
1996  Former South Korean president Chun Doo Wha sentenced to death for his role in the 1979 coup that killed president Park Chung Hee
