325  The Council of Niceae held the first ecumenical debate by the early Christian Church and concluded the establishment of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Convened by Roman Emperor Constantine I, the council deems the Arian belief of Christ as inferior to God as heretical, thus resolving an early Church crisis.
1718  New Orleans founded by French settlers and French-Canadians fleeing English persecution in Canada. The settlement was named in honor of the Duke of Orleans, and remains in French hands until the city is ceded to the Spanish in 1762.
1829  US President Andrew Jackson was refused his offer to purchase Texas from the government of Mexico.
1916  The US National Park Service created
1942  The Duke of Kent, George Edmund and youngest brother of King George VI, are killed during active service in World War II when his Sunderland flying-boat crashes in Scotland during a war mission to Iceland.
