1485  England's King Richard III slain as his forces were defeated during the Battle of Bosworth Field, and ended the War of the Roses between the House of York and Lancaster, Henry Tudor, later to become King Henry VII, left the field triumphant.
1642  The English Civil War began between Cavaliers, supporters of King Charles I, and Roundheads, parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell.
1776  British forces led by General William Howe land on Long Island, New York in hopes of winning back the colonies or at least the Hudson.
1864  First Geneva Convention Treaty signed and eventually lead to the formation of the International Red Cross
1910  Japan annexes Korea five years after gaining control of the country in the Russo-Japanese war.
1922  Irish politician and Sinn Fein leader Michael Collins are killed in an ambush near Macroom, Ireland. Collins was largely responsible for negotiating the 1921 treaty with Great Britain that granted autonomy to southern Ireland.
1942  Brazil declared war on the Axis powers, the only South American country to send forces to Europe and participate in the invasion of Italy.
1996  India vetoed a comprehensive nuclear test band treaty, thus ending the 61-nation Geneva Conference on Disarmament in failure
