1831 Nat Turner believed to be chosen to lead his people out of slavery, began a bloody slave insurrection in Southampton County, Virginia. Him and his 70 followers killed 60 whites and were captured a day later by militia|
1911 Leonardo Da Vinci's famous painting of the wife of Zanoki del Gioconda, The Mona Lisa, was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris by Italian waiter Vicenzo Perruggia and was recovered in Italy two years later
1959 Hawaii becomes the 50th US State under President Eisenhower
1968 Soviet Union (Russia) invades Chzechoslovakia and soon installed a puppet communist government of their own
1983 Returning to the Philippines after three years of self-exile in the US, former Senator Benigno S. Aquino, Jr., is slain while exiting his plane in Manila. Aquino is a political rival of President Ferdinand E. Marcos, and many hold the Marcos government responsible for his death.
