1227 Mongol conqueror Ghengis Khan died during the siege of Hsingchungfu in West Hsia
1587 In the Roanoke colony in present-day North Carolina, Virginia Dare becomes the first child born to English parents on American soil. 3 years later, Dare's grandfather John White, returned to Roanoke to find that Virginia, her parents Ellinor and Ananias, and all the rest of the colonists have mysteriously disappeared.
1862 A Sioux rebellion led by Chief Little Crow began in Minnesota and ignited by the failure of the US government to pay cash annuities promised in a land treaty, Sioux warriors destroy settlements and massacre nearly 1,000 people.
1894 The Bureau of Immigration is created by Congress.
1931 US Patent Office awarded its first plant patent to Henry F. Bosenberg of New Brunswick, New Jersey, for inventing a climbing rose that blooms successively throughout the year named New Dawn
1955 Over a hundred people die due to floods brought on by Hurricane Diane on the northeastern seaboard of the US
1963 James Meredith became the first African-American to attend the University of Mississippi, and the first to graduate in spite of riots and needing to attend class with heavily-armed guards
1964 South Africa is banned from the Olympic Games because of its apartheid policies and does not compete again until the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain.
1965 The first major US ground operation of the Vietnam War begins with Operation Starlite on the Van Tuong Peninsula south of Chu Lai
1991 A coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was arranged by senior government officials. He was detained and troops were sent to Moscow, Leningrad, and the Baltics. The conspirators failed to gain the popularly elected President of the Russian Republic Boris Yeltsin.
