1943  US Lieutenant General George S. Patton arrived in Messina, Sicily, completing the Allied conquest of Sicily.
1969  The Woodstock Music festival came to a close after 3 days in Bethel, New York.  It was estimated 400,000 people attended and three deaths and two births occured.
1969  Hurricane Camille crashes into the upper Gulf Coast at 200+MPH killing 256 people in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana, and injuring thousands more
1987  The last of Adolf Hitler's inner circle, Rudolf Hess, dieD in Spandau Prison in Berlin by suicide.
1988  Pakistani President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq and US Ambassador to Pakistan were killed when their plane exploded just after takeoff for unknown reasons.
1999  A devastating earthquake registering 7.3 on the Richter Scale rips apart Istanbul, Turkey, killing over 2,000 and injuring over 10,000
