1777 General John Stark led patriot forces to defeat the British under General Burgoyne at the Battle of Bennington, New York
1812 American General William Hull surrendered without resistance in Detroit to a lesser British and Indian force under General Issac Brock and was court marshalled two years later.
1960 Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean, becamesan an independent republic after having been Annexed from Turkey during World War I, Cyprus became a British crown colony in 1925.
