1946  US detonated the atomic bomb at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific in its first underwater test (this is why the "new" 2-piece swimsuits were called bikinis, due to lack of material)
1974  The US Supreme Court unaminousluy ruled that US President Richard M. Nixon had to turn over subpoened White House tape recordings to the Watergate special prosecutor
1987  91-year-old Hulda Crooks climbed Mt. Fuji and became the oldest person to climb Japan's highest peak

1897  Aviator Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean
