1648  Margaret Jones of Charlestown, Massachusetts was found guilty and executed in the first US witch trial.
1775  The US Army was founded.
1777  The Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to adopt the Stars and Stripes as the national flag.
1834  Isaac Fischer Jr. of Springfield, Vermont patented sandpaper 
1881  The player piano patented by John McTammany Jr. of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
1922 US President Warren G. Harding became the first president to be heard on the radio on WEAR in Baltimore, Maryland.
1940  German forces began their occupation of Paris.
