1839  Abner Doubleday created baseball in Cooperstown, New York.  He later became a major name in publishing.
1963  Civil rights leader Medger Evers was fatally shot in front of his home in Jackson, Mississippi.
1967  The US Supreme Court struck down state laws prohibiting interracial marriages.
