1809 The first woman to be issued a US patent was Mary Kies of South Killingly, Connecticut for weaving straw with silk and thread.
1847 The American Medical Association organized in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1862 Cinco De Mayo: Battle of Puebla. General Ignacio Zaragoza's troops were outnumbered three to one as they battled the invading French army. They had been outnumbered but still won. The Mexican forces defeated Napoleon III's army and Puebla stood.
1891 Carnegie Hall in New York City dedicated.
