1626  Governor Peter Minuit bought a 20,000 acre island, now Manhattan, or New York City  for $24 in cloth and costume jewelry from the Native American Indians.
1886  The first practical phonograph, known as the gramophone, was patented
1932   Organized crime leader Al Capone sent to the Atlanta Penitentiary for tax evasion.
1970  Four Kent State University students were shot down by National Guard members during an anti-Vietnam War demonstration. Memorial services are held annually for Allison Krause, Sandra Lee Scheuer, Jeffrey Glenn Miller and William K. Schroeder on the Ohio campus.
1985  The Apollo Theatre in the village of Harlem in New York City reopened after a $10.4 million renovation.
