1833  Peterborough, New Hampshire opens the first municipally supported public library.
1872  SR Percy of New York City patentented dried milk.
1905  The first aerial ferry bridge went into operation in Duluth, Minnesota.
1959  NASA announced the selection of the first seven astronauts: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepherd and Donald Slayton.

1945  National Football League officials made it mandatory for football players to wear socks.
1965  Houston Astrodome held its first exhibition game. Astros vs. NY Yankees. Mickey Mantle hit the first homerun in the Dome, but the Astros won.
1965 - "TIME" magazine featured a cover with the entire "Peanuts" gang on this day.
