1818  Congress votes the US should consist of 13 red and white stripes and 20 stars, with an additional star added for each new state.
1841  US President William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia only a month after being sworn in  and the first to die in office.
1850  Los Angeles, California incorporated.
1887  Susanna M. Salter becomes the first female mayor in the US in Argonia, Kansas
1902  Cecil Rhodes, an English financier, left ten million in his will to fund schloraships for Americans at Oxford University.
1949  NATO formed.
1968  Martin Luther King shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee at age 39.

1877  The first telephone was installed in the private home of Charles Williams, Jr. of Somerville, Massachusettes
1980  Arthur Fry of Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing, better known as 3M, invented Post-it notes.

1964  The Beatles set an all-time record on the Top 100 chart of Billboard magazine  with 5 of the top songs
1967  Johnny Carson quit The Tonight Show and returned three weeks later with a $30,000 per week raise
1982  Rock group Blondie had a top hit with Rapture, the first song to introduce rap music.
1984
 Bob Bell retired as Bozo the Clown at WGN-TV Channel 9 in Chicago, Illinois.
